What's in Season This Summer in Canada (And Where to Find It)

A province-by-province guide to summer produce in Canada, and how to find local farms selling it right now.

Summer is the best time of year to eat local in Canada. Farms across the country are bursting with fresh vegetables, fruit, and more โ€” but what's actually ready to pick depends a lot on where you live and what month it is.

Here's a general guide to what Canadian farms are harvesting through the summer months, plus how to find producers near you who have it in stock right now.

June brings the first wave of the season: asparagus, spinach, lettuce, radishes, and early strawberries. Rhubarb is often still going strong from late spring, and it's a great month for fresh herbs like chives, dill, and parsley.

July is when things really pick up. Peas, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, and the first tomatoes start showing up at farm stands, alongside raspberries, blueberries, and cherries in regions that grow them. Garlic scapes make a brief but popular appearance early in the month too.

August is peak season almost everywhere. Corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons, and late-summer berries are all in full swing. Many farms also start their fall crops around now โ€” think winter squash and pumpkins getting close to harvest.

Of course, Canada is a big country, and a farm in the Okanagan Valley is working with a very different growing season than one in Newfoundland or northern Alberta. That's exactly why it's worth checking what's actually available near you, rather than relying on a generic calendar.

That's where GrownLocal.ca comes in. Every producer on our map can mark which months they typically have products available, so you can filter the map to show only farms with something ready right now โ€” no guessing required.

A few tips for making the most of the season:

Visit farm stands or farmers markets early in the day for the best selection, especially for popular items like berries and corn.

Ask producers directly what's coming up next โ€” many are happy to give you a heads up on when a crop will be ready, especially if you follow their farm on GrownLocal.ca and catch their seasonal updates.

Consider a CSA box if you want a hands-off way to eat seasonally all summer long โ€” check out our guide to CSA boxes if you're new to the idea.
